Here at Marjon, we have 30 years' experience of training speech and language therapists. From September 2025, we are excited to be offering a 3.5 year full time study BSc route to qualification drawing on our 10+ year history of offering a previous programme of the same length. Students may also choose to study on our flexible part time route taking up to 7 years to qualify (depending on the balance of part and full time years completed). FAQs

How many days a week do full time students study?

In the first year of the programme, you will typically have 2.5 days a week in direct, timetabled contact with lecturers (lectures, workshops, seminars etc.). The majority of our teaching sessions are on campus, and you will need to be able to come to the university for these. Occasionally, sessions may take place online, but this is an exception rather than the rule. At least 1 day per week is reserved for placement related activity (though this will fluctuate over the course of the year) and the rest of the time is recommended for personal study. Speech and Language Therapy is an academically diverse discipline which requires you to study a wide range of subjects and apply your knowledge to skills based learning. You will need to study outside of timetabled lectures in order to succeed on the programme and should factor this into your decision making.

What does the part time route look like?

Our flexible part time route allows students to continue their studies with us when their circumstances do not allow for full time study. If you were to study the whole programme part time, it lasts 7 years, but the option is there to study at different rates across the programme, for example, Year 1 & 2 Full time, Year 3 Part time, Year 4 (1 semester only) Full time. You can apply to the part time route if you intend to study Year 1 part time, but otherwise should apply to our full time route. If your circumstances change during your time with us, we will talk to you about your options and how to register changes to your route.

Part time study is equivalent to half of the full time e4quivalent so that a full time year takes 2 academic years part time. The only exception to this is the final semester where part time study would take place over a whole academic year, rather than finishing in January. It is worth noting that funding for any part time study is also halved.

Do you have students who have previous degrees or work experiences on the programme?

Yes! We have students of all ages and with a wide range of previous life experiences on our programme and welcome the diversity that this offers.

Will all placements be close to my home address?

There are a range of placements across the programme from experiential placements where students spend time with people who have communication and/or eating drinking and swallowing difficulties but not therapists, and placements with SLT departments that happen either 1 or 2 days a week alongside teaching (concurrent placements) or 3 or 4 days a week with self study but no timetabled teaching alongside (block placements).

Across the programme, we source our placements from a very large geographical area-from Penzance in the West to Bournemouth & Poole in the East to the Forest of Dean and Swindon in the North. We run an offers-based placement system which means that not all possible settings are available for each placement. However, we work closely with all of our students to take into account any particular factors that are relevant to them when allocating students to placement settings, for example, the maximum distance possible for you to travel, whether you can stay away overnight, caring responsibilities or personal health considerations. In order to give everyone the broadest clinical experience whilst a student (required to meet the graduating standards of the profession), we do not send students to the same service multiple times, so there will be some travel expectations for all.
