Hello and welcome to the MSc Sport Rehabilitation programme. I am Sarah Martin, your Programme Coordinator, and I am delighted that you are preparing to join us at Plymouth Marjon University.

Students join this programme from a wide range of academic and professional backgrounds. Some will have recent experience of university study, while others may be returning after a break. Some will already feel confident in anatomy, exercise or research, while others will be developing these areas as they progress. You are not expected to arrive as a finished clinician.

This page is designed to help you understand what the MSc will be like, identify the actions you need to complete and explore optional preparation if it would be useful. Please do not feel that you need to spend the summer relearning an entire degree. Focus on completing the essential steps, familiarising yourself with the programme and arriving ready to learn.

You are not expected to arrive knowing everything.

The programme will help you develop the knowledge, practical skills, clinical reasoning and professional confidence required to become an evidence-informed Sport Rehabilitator. The preparation resources are there to support you, not to test whether you deserve your place.

Different backgrounds are normal

Students arrive with different degrees, experiences and strengths. You are not expected to be identical to everyone else in your cohort.

You do not need perfect anatomy knowledge or extensive clinical experience. These will be developed and applied throughout the MSc.

Confidence comes through practice

Practical and clinical confidence develops gradually through teaching, peer practice, feedback and supervised experience.

You can ask for help now

You do not need to wait until Welcome Week to ask questions or discuss concerns about starting the programme.

What will studying this MSc actually be like?

The MSc combines academic study, practical learning, clinical reasoning, research and supervised clinical experience. You will become more independent as your knowledge and confidence develop.

Practical learning

You will practise palpation, assessment, movement analysis, exercise instruction and rehabilitation skills in supported practical sessions.

Master's-level study

You will read independently, evaluate evidence, justify your decisions and apply research to complex clinical and professional problems.

Clinical reasoning

You will learn how to gather information, identify concerns, form clinical impressions and make safe, evidence-informed decisions.

Learning with others

Peer practice, case discussion, collaborative problem-solving and giving and receiving feedback are important parts of the programme.

Independent study

Taught sessions are only one part of the MSc. You will also need time for preparation, reading, assessments, research and reflection.

Clinical experience

You will apply your learning in supervised clinical and placement environments while developing professional confidence and competence.

The MSc Sport Rehabilitation is a pre-registration programme. It is designed for graduates from relevant disciplines who are working towards the knowledge, practical competence, clinical reasoning and professional behaviours required to enter the Sport Rehabilitation profession.

Professional preparation

Aligned with professional practice

Some competencies, learning activities and clinical tasks are informed by the BASRaT Professional Standards and Role Delineation. This helps ensure that your development reflects the expectations placed on an entry-level Graduate Sport Rehabilitator.

Master's-level expectations

Designed and assessed at Level 7

Although some practical competencies may be similar to those encountered on undergraduate professional programmes, the learning tasks and assessments on this MSc are designed and assessed at Level 7. You will be expected to evaluate evidence, justify decisions, manage complexity and uncertainty, and demonstrate independent professional judgement.

What this means for you

You will not simply repeat undergraduate learning at a higher pace. You will use professional competencies as a foundation for more advanced clinical reasoning, critical evaluation, evidence-informed decision-making and reflective practice. Practical performance remains important, but you will also need to explain, defend and adapt your decisions at Master's level.

Preparation is optional unless a task is specifically labelled otherwise. You are not expected to complete every activity, and the resources are not used to judge whether you deserve your place.

Postgraduate study

Critical thinking, academic reading and writing, referencing, time management and returning to study.

Knowledge refreshers

Anatomy, physiology, movement, biomechanics, exercise terminology and rehabilitation foundations.

Digital confidence

Teams, email, Word, PowerPoint, file organisation, journals and online submission.

Optional tasks and reading

A small number of introductory activities and carefully selected resources to help you begin thinking about the course.

It is normal to feel unsure before starting

“My anatomy knowledge is rusty.”

This is common. You do not need to relearn everything before arriving. Important knowledge will be revisited and applied throughout the programme.

“I have not studied for several years.”

Academic confidence develops gradually. Your wider life and professional experience can be a real strength, and support is available.

“I do not have much clinical experience.”

Previous experience varies. Practical and clinical skills are taught progressively, with safe practice, supervision and feedback at the centre.

“I am worried about balancing everything.”

The MSc requires planning, especially alongside employment or family commitments. Be realistic about your time and speak to us early if you are concerned.

Do I need previous clinical experience?

No. Students join with different levels of experience. Practical and clinical skills are developed progressively throughout the programme.

What does pre-registration mean?

It means the programme is designed to prepare graduates from relevant disciplines to develop the professional competencies required to enter Sport Rehabilitation practice. Some learning is aligned with the BASRaT Professional Standards and Role Delineation, while all tasks and assessments are designed and assessed at Master's level.

How much anatomy do I need to know before starting?

You should have a relevant academic foundation, but you are not expected to remember every structure or function. Optional revision resources are available to help you refresh key areas.

Will I practise techniques on classmates?

Yes. Practical learning may include observation, palpation, movement assessment, physical testing and exercise instruction with peers. Consent, dignity, confidentiality and professional behaviour are expected throughout.

Is attendance important?

Yes. Attendance is particularly important for practical, clinical and placement learning because these experiences cannot be fully replaced by reading independently.

Can I work alongside the programme?

Many students work alongside their studies, but you will need to account for taught sessions, independent study, assessment deadlines and clinical experience.

Who should I contact if I am worried about starting?
