Support Before You Arrive

Starting postgraduate study can feel exciting and slightly daunting. This page explains the support available before you arrive and helps you identify anything that would be useful to arrange early.

You do not need to wait until the course starts

Some support arrangements take time to put in place. Contacting the university before enrolment can help ensure that you begin the programme with the right adjustments, information and practical support already available.

Early contact is particularly helpful if you:

Have a disability or long-term health condition
This may include physical, sensory, medical or mental health conditions.

Have a specific learning difference
For example dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD or another neurodivergent profile.

Need adjustments for practical learning
This may relate to mobility, communication, fatigue, pain, sensory needs or participation.

Have caring or work responsibilities
Early planning can help you prepare for block teaching, deadlines and independent study.

Are worried about returning to study
Support is available even if you do not have a formal diagnosis or existing support plan.

Have concerns about finance, travel or accommodation
It is better to ask early than to struggle alone once teaching begins.

You do not need to have everything fully resolved before contacting us. A conversation is often the best first step.

Disability, inclusion and reasonable adjustments

The university can discuss support for disabilities, long-term health conditions, mental health conditions and specific learning differences. Depending on your needs, support may include reasonable adjustments, assistive technology, accessible learning materials or advice about practical and assessment arrangements.

Contacting the support team before enrolment is strongly recommended because evidence, meetings and support plans may take time to arrange.

Academic skills and returning to study

Support is available for academic writing, critical reading, referencing, planning assignments, time management and using feedback. This can be particularly useful if you have been away from education for some time or are unfamiliar with postgraduate study.

Mental health and wellbeing

Starting a new programme can place pressure on your time and confidence. Wellbeing and mental health support is available through university services. You do not need to wait for a crisis before asking for advice.

Financial support

You may be able to access advice about postgraduate funding, budgeting, bursaries or financial difficulty. Funding arrangements can vary, so personalised advice should be sought from the appropriate university team.

Careers and professional development

Career support is available during your studies to help with career planning, applications, professional profiles, interview preparation and identifying opportunities relevant to Sport Rehabilitation.

Library and digital support

The university provides access to library resources, electronic books, academic databases and digital learning support. Help is also available with university systems, software access and online study.

Programme-specific support

The programme team can answer questions about the course structure, practical blocks, assessments, clinical experience and preparation for study. Where another specialist service is better placed to help, we can direct you to the appropriate team.

A few practical checks can make your first weeks much easier.

University access
Check that you can access your university email, Canvas and any required online accounts.

Travel and block teaching
Think ahead about travel, parking, accommodation or caring arrangements for campus block days.

Study environment
Identify where you will complete online learning, reading and assessment work.

Technology
Check that your computer, internet connection, microphone and camera are suitable for online study.

Practical participation
Tell the programme team early if you may require adjustments to practical teaching or clinical activity.

Time planning
Look realistically at work, family, travel and study commitments before teaching begins.
